What Happens When We See Others As Trustworthy?

Dear Spirit: Allow us to trust in you. Teach us how to discern trustworthiness in others. Trust is at the root of our prayers for strong Black communities. We know that trust is synonymous with faith. Allow our trust in others to reflect our faith in you. Amen.

“God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.” – Isaiah 12:2

Many of us struggle to trust others. Who can blame us? Anti-Black capitalist society constantly pits us against each other, forcing us to believe that we can only achieve through competition, not through trust.

But what if we flipped how we think about trust from being scary to divine?

The bible reminds us to trust in the Spirit. Here, trust becomes synonymous with faith.

Since we’re all a reflection of Spirit, to trust in Spirit means to trust in ourselves and one another.

Building trust takes time. It requires vulnerability, transparency, open-mindedness, communication, and the space to express our needs and desires.

Most importantly, trust requires having faith in someone to honor your truth.

In her book “Emergent Strategy,” adrienne maree brown writes, “Only when you choose to trust someone do they become trustworthy.”

Trusting in someone is another way of saying, “I have faith in you.”

One of the most dangerous things anti-Black systems and governments do is instill fear and promote false narratives intended to cause us to distrust each other.

Trust is an essential ingredient for building strong Black communities. How are we centering trust within our plans for Black liberated futures?
