This Threat To Black Romantic Love Needs Our Attention
Navigating romantic relationships can be challenging whether you’re happily single, married, or looking for love. For Black relationships, in particular, there’s one thing to keep an eye out for that can harm even the strongest of bonds.
Racism can take a toll on our people in ways that are hard to capture, and this includes our romantic relationships. Could racism be hurting your love life? Here are a few ways racism might make your relationships much more challenging.
#1: Mental health. Emotional support is important in any relationship, and this is true when it comes to getting support from our partners. When both parties mutually support each other around racism, Black couples benefit.
#2: Finances and Commitment. Couples of all races argue over finances, but there’s an extra layer for Black folks. Those who experience the financial strain of racism through difficulty making money, taking care of financial obligations, or finding employment are less likely to commit to relationships.
#3: Fertility. Black women who experience racism are more likely to have fertility and reproductive issues that can make growing a family more difficult. Racism can also make fertility treatments and other tries at having children ineffective.
Racism works hard, but Black love works harder. Once we realize how much racism can hurt our hearts, we must fortify ourselves with knowledge of history and ensure we show support for each other. Black love wins.
