This Moving MLK Sermon Reminds Us Of the Power Of Love
God loves us so much that he wants us to be free. MLK Jr. believed this with every bone in his body. One of his last sermons reminds us that love is the world’s most powerful force.
We know about MLK Jr.’s famous ‘I Have A Dream’ Speech, but his sermon two months before his death was one of his most poignant. The Drum Major Instinct reminds us of God’s love and how it can change the world for the better.
In the speech he said: "I'd like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others.” King knew the work wasn’t about the spotlight of leadership. Instead, he cared more about being a servant for liberation.
He continued, “I'd like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody.”
MLK’s love went beyond romantic or familial love. He loved all of us so much that he ultimately gave his life to take the necessary steps toward our liberated future.
That's a deep love.
King wanted to be on God’s side “in love, justice, truth and in commitment to others so that we can make of this old world, a new world.” He knew that we were trudging a long road toward liberation.
He knew God had always been on our side and that we deserved a new world.
We must believe with the same fervor that each of us has a role in liberation. We can make a new world, but we must act on our divine assignments: an unwavering commitment to love, justice, and truth.
