These African Proverbs Are Ancestral Wisdom For The Ages
With so much happening in the world, we sometimes need a reminder of how resilient, wise, and amazing we are. Here are five gems of wisdom from our ancestors that can help us relax, relate, and release.
Sometimes, we can feel so insignificant that we forget how amazing we are. As the ancestors say, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, spend a night with a mosquito!”
Even when times get tough, we must keep trying our best. As the ancestors say, “If you are building a house and a nail breaks, do you stop building, or do you change the nail?”
How many times have you been smiling on the outside, but suffering on the inside? As the ancestors say: “Teeth do not see poverty.” Never think that a smile means all is well and be willing to offer support, encouragement, and kindness to others.
We all make mistakes, but we can learn from them if we reflect and are honest with ourselves. As the ancestors say, “Don’t look where you fell; look where you slipped.”
All of our actions have effects, both intended and unintended. As the ancestors say: “If you pick up one end of the stick, you also pick up the other.”
These proverbs are nuggets of wisdom that those gone before us left to help us better understand life. And they just might help us when the going gets tough. After all, we’ve survived oppression, racism, and white terrorism thus far on their shoulders.
