The Relationship We Have With Our Bodies Is Tied To Our Faith
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.
Your body is divine. The vessel that tenderly holds your spirit. Living adornment. Caring for our spiritual health must include the relationship we have with our bodies.
Our bodies need water and sustenance. Sleep. Touch. Laughter. Boundaries. Routines. Community. Joyful movement. Body care is spiritual care.
Author and founder of Black Liturgies, Cole Arthur Riley writes, “There are systems in this world that have everything to gain from your disembodiment. Because emptied bodies are easier to use. Stay whole.”
Anti-Blackness has only ever viewed our bodies as capitalist objects to profit from. It wants us exhausted and in conflict with our bodies so that we feel compelled to dissociate from ourselves.
When we’re not present in our bodies, we can’t resist. Now more than ever, we must be present.
What does radically loving your body look like? Developing a loving, intentional relationship with our bodies is a form of gratitude for God.
The more we practice loving our bodies the closer we become to being love embodied. Being love embodied is our highest form of resistance.
