If You Seek The Spirit Of The Lord, You Seek Freedom

What does it mean to you to be free? 2 Corinthians 3:16 reminds us that “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Frederick Douglass sought out the Spirit of the Lord. He got himself free, but knew it was his responsibility to return and do the same for others.

Surrendering to the Lord is like lifting a veil. Suddenly we’re able to see the world’s oppressive systems without letting them rule our spirits.

“The veil” was lifted for Frederick Douglass when he was young.

The wife of Douglass’ enslaver was teaching Douglass to read. His enslaver said, “If he learns to read the bible it will forever unfit him to be a slave… If you teach him to read, he’ll want to know how to write, and with this accomplished, he’ll be running away with himself.”

From this Douglass discerned the secret to getting free was in the bible, and he dedicated himself to learning to read.

Through the bible, Douglass learned of God’s love and that God was constantly championing the oppressed. Douglass became liberated in spirit and this liberation encouraged him to escape physical bondage.

Disguising himself, Douglass escaped. He was finally free in spirit, mind, and body. But now it was his job to get others free.

Douglass dedicated himself to anti-slavery movements, traveling around the United States and Europe to educate others on abolition.

Whenever we experience the veil of oppression being removed, it becomes our responsibility to help others within our community remove their veil, too.

There’s no “me” in Black Liberation. None of us are free until we’re all free.
