How To Incorporate Litanies Into Your Prayer Practice
Being vulnerable enough to ask for help can feel scary, but God is always with us. A litany is a powerful way to invite God into our vulnerable moments. Here are tips on how to incorporate litanies into your moments of solitude.
A litany is a list of intentionally crafted statements to be shared with God. After a statement to God is made, it’s followed by an affirmation of God’s presence.
A litany is an invitation to list your dreams, fears, insecurities, grief, or hopes to God. It is permission to be deliberately vulnerable and open to Him.
Tips for writing a personal litany:
- Research other litanies for inspiration.
- Write out a list of your values, dreams, fears, or areas of growth. Refer to this list as you write your litany.
- Don’t expect it to be perfect.
You can write a litany on your own or with a group.
Litanies are great for family prayer time. They’re easily repeatable, and children especially benefit from repetition as they learn a new practice.
Sample Litany:
Dear God: Allow me to be present
“Grant me the grace” (*repeat after each statement)
That I be kinder to myself as I navigate oppressive systems
That my spirit remain strong
That I may know my worth fully in You
That I may love myself through Your eyes
