How To Cultivate A Positive Body Image

Your body is worthy of celebration. Throughout history, the world has tried to convince us that Black bodies aren't lovable, but that's never been true. Here's how we cultivate a positive body image.

In “The Body Is Not An Apology: The Power Of Radical Self-Love,” activist Sonya Renee Taylor writes:  “You came here, to this planet, as unapologetic radical love…Making peace with your body is about awakening to who you have always been: the physical, spiritual, and energetic manifestation of radical self-love.”

Here are three ways to cultivate a positive body image and to practice radical love for yourself.

Use Affirmations

When's the last time you told yourself, "I love you." Daily affirmations can be powerful for cultivating a positive body image.

Start your day with affirmations that feel right in your body. Here are a few to try: "My body takes me places, and I'm grateful." "My body is a gift that is uniquely mine. It doesn't need to look like anyone else's."

Gratitude List

Our bodies carry us through life in an extraordinary way worth celebrating. To express gratitude for your body, keep a running list of your gratitude for your body and what it allows you to do.

Do What Feels Good

Wear the clothes that make you feel comfortable in your body. Move your body in the best way, whether stretching or walking. Care for your body with the tenderness of a bubble bath, massage, or self-pleasure.

When we love our bodies, we see others with love and acknowledge differences without shame. Loving our bodies is what God called us here to do.
