Craving Something New? Practicing Escapism Can Help
Do you need an escape? We all do sometimes, and these three ways to practice escapism could benefit our spiritual, mental, and physical health.
Life is beautiful but can be incredibly taxing on our spirits. Sometimes, we need to escape, if only for a moment.
Movement is one of the most beneficial forms of escapism. Whether we're throwing music on to dance or going for a walk in nature, moving our bodies helps regulate stress levels and somatically releases trauma stored in the body.
Daydreaming, using the mind and thoughts to imagine various possibilities, can be helpful escapism. Not only is daydreaming a form of rest, but it's also a powerful tool for our future.
While we can't daydream ourselves out of the anti-Black systems stacked against us, many consider daydreaming necessary for shaping a new world. The Nap Ministry's Tricia Hersey often speaks about the "DreamSpace," a sacred place for imagination, healing, and communication with our ancestors.
Reading is another healthy way to escape. Books, magazines, and audiobooks can help transport us to another place or time. Getting lost in a good story boosts creativity and motivation.
We all deserve to experience peace, but sometimes, we must find a way to escape. What can you do at this moment to refresh your spirit?
