Divine mother and protector of women and children, Erzulie Dantor is Haiti’s most powerful Lwa. Known for her love, loyalty, and protection, Erzulie is the fiery warrior spirit to call upon in battle.

Legend says she’s responsible for the Haitian Revolution.

During a thunderstorm in August 1791, thousands of enslaved and freed Haitians gathered to perform a sacred ritual that would go down in history as the Bois Caïman Ceremony. Led by Vodou priest Dutty Boukman and the  priestess Cecile Fatiman, the group chanted, sang, and gave sacrificial offerings as they prayed for revolution.

Erzulie heard their call.

According to legend, she possessed both Boukman and Fatiman. Erzulie’s words poured through Fatiman’s lips, urging the eager group of revolutionaries to rise up. Erzulie would protect them.

Within a week the revolutionaries had destroyed roughly 1,800 plantations and killed 1,000 slave owners. The Bois Caïman Ceremony is credited with the success of the Haitian Revolution.

Even in the spirit realm, Black women and femme energy have always been at the heart of our resistance. From the Haitian Revolution to the #MeToo movement, Black women continue to fight for a new world.

To be loved, protected, and held down by Black women is one of the most sacred gifts. Let’s show the Black women in our lives the same revolutionary love they’ve put into Black liberation efforts.
