The Unsung Heroes Keeping Black Faith and Freedom Alive
You are deserving of the truth. Griots are culture keepers whose work reminds us that God’s love for us is unwavering and liberation is His will.
Psalms 78:2-4 tells us, "I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old — things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done."
In West Africa, griots are revered storytellers, keepers of traditions, and mediators between seen and unseen worlds. They use music, poetry, and dance to share stories, histories, and truths. We embody these forms of expression in church, a testament to our ancestry and the Lord's innate love for who we are.
Griots are essential for shaping our narratives, realizing our truths, and understanding our stories. Like griots, Black Liberation Theology leans on the tradition of speaking about hidden things.
Mainstream Christianity was used to justify enslavement and injustice, but we know God's love for us has always been unwavering.
The way griots link us between worlds, we, as future ancestors, must be the link between sharing the truth of our faith and history to help shape a liberated future for all Black people.
Anti-Black teachings of Christianity are not ours to carry. We deserve a world where we all believe how much God and our ancestors want us to be free. That’s a truth that keeps us connected and grounded across generations.
