Vent writing is a tool to write our rage and make space for negative emotions; releasing it all is part of God’s will for us.
Mainstream Christianity tries to vilify our warranted reactions about the systems we live within, but anger isn’t inherently sinful. Black Liberation Theology teaches that God has always been on the side of the oppressed. Therefore, our rage is divinely valid.
Psalm 7:11 says, “God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.” God is on our side and will intervene on our behalf against oppressors.
Vent writing encourages us to lean away from the dangers of toxic positivity and instead into the benefits of self-expression, like clarity, as a means of emotional regulation.
This work is about refusing to let feelings of anger fester in our spirits. Releasing that which tries to hold us back is a part of God’s will and a reminder that anger is okay as long as we aren’t consumed by it.
“...Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil,” says Ephesians 4:25-27.
Our people have led rebellions and revolutions fueled by anger, the voice of God and ancestors. We must remember that rage is a sacred catalyst for healing and liberation.
