Why ‘I Rebuke You’ Is A Deeply Powerful Statement For Us

Whenever we rebuke something in the name of Jesus, something powerful happens. We wrap ourselves in a blanket of spiritual comfort that wickedness cannot penetrate. It’s an expression we’ve long used and has always been deeper than words.

For generations, we've rebuked everything from illness to anti-Black violence. Whether through prayer or embracing Black spiritual traditions, like Hoodoo, rebuking something is an act of resistance in and of itself that we lean on when malicious energy comes our way.

When we rebuke something in Jesus's name, we lean into our power, discernment, and relationship with God to manifest righteousness. It's a deep knowing that God has and will always be on our side. We must always rebuke those who seek to oppress us.

As with our sister Sonya Massey's near-final words, rebuking provides reassurance that when we're called home, especially at the hands of anti-Blackness, God and our ancestors will swaddle us in an eternal spirit of love and protection.

God has always been on the side of the oppressed. We must know this and continue to work to recognize when any person, thing, or system is our opps. We can rebuke both with our words and actions.

Let's commit to rebuking all forms of anti-Blackness, always. Amen and Ashé.
