She Was Terrified, Until She Remembered God Lived In Her Voice
"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.” - Jeremiah 17:7-8.
When we trust in God we’re guided by faith not by ego. Faith requires vulnerability. To really “let go and let God,” we must willingly surrender to God’s plan.
In order to surrender we not only have to have faith in God, but have faith in ourselves.
Julia A.J. Foote exemplified this throughout her career as a preacher.
Born to formerly enslaved parents, Foote joined the African Methodist Episcopal church as a teenager. There she heard Spirit calling to her, encouraging her to preach and inspire others through faith.
But there was one flaw with this plan.
Women preachers were nearly unheard of in the early 1800s. Foote’s church was so taken aback by her nerve that they kicked her out! But she couldn’t be stopped.
Foote gave sermons across the country until eventually she was speaking to crowds with thousands of listeners.
Foote became the A.M.E. Zion church’s first woman deacon and the second ordained woman elder of the A.M.E. church. While she didn’t always know God’s plan, Foote never questioned her faith in Spirit.
Believe in yourself because God believes in you. Trust in God because God trusts in you.
