How To Begin A Solitude Practice
- Building strong communities is necessary for spiritual growth. Beloved bell hooks wrote, "Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation.” But there's a difference between permanent isolation and taking moments to be alone with Spirit.
Here are three ways to practice being in solitude and their benefits.
- Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to practice solitude, and it has proven mental, physical, and spiritual health benefits. Try meditating in the morning in a place that calms you.
It could be your bedroom, a park bench, or the beach. What works best for your solitude journey is unique to you.
- Prayer
Spending intentional time in prayer is an excellent way to be in solitude. Avoid distractions and find a comfortable place to convene with self and God. Speak aloud if it is helpful. Solitude doesn't always have to be silent.
- Writing
Writing is a powerful tool for tapping into solitude. The page is a safe place for you and your innermost thoughts. Set a timer and dedicate time to reflect on whatever your heart is holding.
- Spending intentional time alone is necessary. When we know and love ourselves as God does, it's easy to extend that love to one another.
