How ‘Let Go and Let God’ Reminds Us Of His Divine Protection

God has always been on our side. Enslaved people knew this well, and they leaned on the idea of God’s retribution as justice for the terror they endured. We can lean on this belief, too.

While hypocritical clergymen preached to them of their obligation to serve their enslavers, their belief in God’s retribution was based on the biblical messages which shared that “God punishes corrupt societies, especially those that take advantage of the poor and oppressed.”

Even though they didn’t know if they’d personally witness any version of this retribution in their lifetimes, they relied on divine hope to keep going. They knew God’s love and protection of our people were worth believing in.

While we must continuously pursue liberation, we can rest in knowing that retribution for those who oppress will be divinely handled. The Bible and ancestral history remind us to let go and let God.

Understand that we may not witness the fall of every oppressive system in this lifetime, but we must still move toward change with the knowledge of God’s inherent love for us. Amen.
