4 Tips To Connect Black Youth With Spirit
Encourage Questions:
Children’s questions are rooted in curiosity and a natural desire to make sense of the world.
We can support our youth by encouraging them to ask questions and asking them questions in return. Try questions like “How do you picture God?” or “What does faith mean to you?”
Be Open:
Fear of judgment or abandonment for having different beliefs can deter children.
As adults, we can model that we have our own beliefs but can be spiritually open. Spirit is abundant and appears in different ways.
Use Technology:
Incorporating technology is a good way to support young people. For example, turn Bible studies into a TikTok challenge.
Keep It Relevant:
Perhaps most important is helping youth find relevance in how faith impacts their daily lives. Doing things that connect faith with family, community, and service projects can help establish relevance, planting seeds for how faith is tied to Black liberation efforts.
Studies have shown Black teens who identify as spiritual are less likely to engage in substance abuse.
We are responsible for guiding Black youth as they develop a lifelong relationship with God. How can you help the next generation build spiritual power?
